Baseball: Pine Island jumps on Lake City early for win
Pine Island went ahead 5-0 after two innings and never relinquished that lead as they held on for a 5-4 Hiawatha Valley League victory over Lake City on Thursday.
The Panthers built up their lead in a hurry with four runs in the first inning.
“We had a couple of miscues in that inning,” said Tigers’ head coach Perry Iberg. “Some defensive lapses, and they had a couple of hits so it was a combination of hits and errors. They hit the ball fairly well early, then Reid (Lundell, Lake City’s starting pitcher) settled down and limited their hitting.”
John Brown was the Tigers’ top hitter, going 2-for-4, and Luke Hartzell and Michael Noll were each 1-for-4 with an RBI. Lundell went six innings, allowing five runs (two earned) and one walk with three strikeouts in the loss.
Lake City (7-10) heads to Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Friday for an HVL doubleheader.
