Baseball: Cannon Falls clinches HVL Blue; Cougars winless on Friday

In what one can only hope is Mother Nature’s final trick this season, Zumbrota-Mazeppa played 15 innings on Friday, and suffered three losses over three games to two different teams.

In the first game of the triple-header, Lake City topped the Cougars, 8-0 to complete a game suspended from Thursday, May 8.

Brady Schoenfelder took the loss, throwing three innings and giving up eight runs on six hits. The Cougars managed just two hits, one each from Jacob Ugland and Cody Hinrichs.

Reid Lundell got the win, throwing four shutout innings. Trevor Gnotke got the save in the fifth.

In the second game, scheduled for only five innings, Lake City again blanked Z-M, this time 4-0.

Hinrichs went five innings to take the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks. Ugland had three hits in three at-bats, and Connor Hegseth had a double in three plate appearances.

John Brown picked up the victory for the Tigers, throwing all five innings.

In the final game, Cannon Falls ratcheted up the offense, taking down the Cougars 9-1.

Michael Wicks pitched six innings, giving up 12 hits and nine runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Ugland went 2-for-3 in the night cap, with Cody Heitman, Alex Nelson, Schoenfelder, Wicks and Mark Yeakel each collecting a hit.

The Bombers were led by Bryce Boyle-Hoban, Brock Peterson and Peter Haggerty, all of whom had two hits in the game. Hoban added two RBI while Johnson allowed one earned run and struck out four in six innings to get the win.

With the victory, Cannon Falls clinched the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division championship.

The Cougars (3-14) will close the regular season with three games over four days. On Saturday, Z-M will head to Rochester to take on Lourdes, followed by home games on Monday, against St. Charles, and Tuesday, against Hayfield.

Lake City will face Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Monday, while the Bombers will host Rochester Lourdes in the HVL title game on Monday.
