August brings warm end to summer
Many students headed back to school this week, marking the unofficial end of summer.
But the temperatures in the last week or two of August made it feel as if summer was really just getting started.
The same seemed true at the Red Wing Water Park.
For the whole summer, attendance was down by about 1,000 people from the 2012 season, Community Recreation coordinator Dave Borgen said. Much of that was due to a colder June and July, though.
"Actually, our August was pretty good," he said.
August attendance at the pool was a little better than the same time last year, Borgen said.
The pool had 584 visitors Aug. 20, which also happened to be the first day the temperature hit 90 degrees in August.
"At the end of the summer when it warmed up again, then the numbers really bounced back for us," Borgen said.
The pool was closed on Aug. 5, the coldest day of the month with a high of 73 and a low of 51 degrees.
The water park typically does not open if the temperature is below 70 degrees at 11 a.m. Many of the high temperatures in early and mid-August barely reached a few degrees over 70.
The average daily high of about 80 degrees for August was a degree colder than July's average high, and the average low of about 58 degrees was five degrees below July's.
Wind gusts also reached up to 53 mph Aug. 6 and hit about 20 mpg the 14th, 23rd and 24th.
The weather did heat up — just in time for the final days of the pool's season.
"We had a couple good days in our last week," Borgen said.
The water park's last day was scheduled for Aug. 25. The temperature reached its hottest of 97 degrees for the month the next day.
The higher attendance in late August came after a bit slower summer. June started off cold and much of July was cool as well, especially in the last week. That cut down on visitors to the pool overall, Borgen said.
"That cool spell really affected us," he said.
