PLUM CITY -- Pepin High School's girls basketball team used a spread zone defense to force Plum City to shoot from the outside, allowing them to stay competitive with the Blue Devils in Tuesday's Dunn-St. Croix Conference contest.

Plum City countered by attacking the gaps in the Laker zone, which allowed them to outscore their rivals 35-22 in the second half for a 59-42 victory.

The Blue Devils struggled shooting in the first half and had post player Ashley Hinrichs on the bench with two fouls. Pepin's Tasha Heit scored 10 points to keep the score close. Early in the third quarter it was tied at 25.

Plum City's Cassy Hetrick and Kayla Kernstock responded to Pepin's challenge by scoring in double figures, Hetrick with 12 points and Kernstock with 11 points. Hetrick was able to make several mid-range jumpers in the second half and Kernstock was able to get easy baskets underneath the basket.

"I was hitting those shots in warm-ups and I knew I had just had to keep shooting to get my confidence up and get into a rhythm." Hetrick said.

In the past few games Daleiden and Hinrichs have teamed up to lead Plum City to wins. Having more players contribute pleases head coach Jason Glampe.

"It makes us a lot tougher to defend," Glampe said. "It's nice to know that while we're not very deep team, we do have options in case we face the same kind of situation as we did with Ashley in foul trouble or Amanda off on her shot."

Plum City outscored the Lakers 14-6 in the third quarter and was able to race past them in the fourth quarter with transition baskets. Daleiden eventually found her shot and led the Devils in scoring with 17 and Hinrichs also made double figures with 11 points.

"We let Hetrick get away from us and it hurt because we played good defense until then," Pepin head coach Barry Terpstra said. "Once they started hitting their shots, they were able to relax and played the way they wanted instead of what we were forcing them to do."

Casie Schultz led Pepin with 13 points and Heit finished with 12 points. The Lakers' Brianna Kirchner had eight points and Jolene Hince scored seven points.

Plum City improves to 7-5 overall and 6-5 in the Dunn-St. Croix while Pepin drops to 2-9 in the league, 2-10 over all.
