Area amateur baseball: St. Croix Falls 7, Hager City 4 (11 innings)
Game recap: Hager City's Chase Melstrom connected with a three-run home run in the ninth inning to tie the game and put it into extra innings. Immediately following the home run, the game was delayed for an hour and a half due to heavy rain. St. Croix Falls scored the go-ahead run on a strikeout with two outs that got by the catcher. The runner going to first on the play shielded the ball from the first basemen resulting in a dropped ball.
"(The rain delay) really took momentum away from us," Hager City's Cory Brathall said.
Difference maker: Melstrom, who played catcher for the first time since being a sophomore in high school, kept the Skeeters in the game. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
"I take my hat off to Chase," Brathall said. "He really stepped it up today and kept us in the game.
Top players: Wyatt Rowe pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, striking out seven and giving up two earned runs. Tyler Regnier went 2-for-2 with a run and two stolen bases.
