Area amateur baseball: Elmwood 7, Hager City 6
Game recap: Elmwood scored five unanswered runs over the final two innings -- four in the eighth and one in the ninth -- to pull out the come-from-behind victory at home Sunday.
Elliot Foley allowed all five runs (four earned) and suffered the loss.
"It was pretty disheartening," Skeeters player/manager Cory Brathall said. "... We played well for seven or eight innings and let it slip through our fingers."
Difference maker: With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth and Eric Konsela on second, Elmwood's Jonah Lansing hit the ball to first baseman Chad Melstrom. After recording the 3-U putout for the first out, Melstrom fired to third to try and get Konsela. The throw was off the mark and Konsela scored to end the game.
Top players: Brady Brenner started and pitched six strong innings for Hager City. He allowed one hit, struck out three and walked four. Elmwood scored just two runs (one earned) with him on the mound.
Mike finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Skeeters.
Next up: St. Paul Mudhens at Hager City (1-6 St. Croix Valley League), 5 p.m. Saturday
