Amateur Baseball: Mudhens drop Game 1 to Dundas
It took seven-and-a-half innings to break a scoreless tie between Miesville and Dundas in the Section 1B playoffs. And the Dukes, by virtue of a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, took a one-game lead in the best-of-three series, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
A pitcher’s duel from the beginning, both starters completed the game, giving up 13 hits between them, with 20 strikeouts and just three walks.
Miesville starter Steve Maher pitched eight innings, striking out 13 to go with one walk, eight hits and two earned runs. Todd Mathison threw nine shutout innings for Dundas, giving up five hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts.
In the bottom of the eighth, Steve Loos and Carson Jones had back-to-back one-out singles with Loos scoring on Mike Ludwig’s next-at-bat single. Jones scored moments later on an RBI groundout from Pat Wadzinski.
The Mudhens left eight batters on base, including men on second and third in the seventh inning.
Miesville advanced to the second round by virtue of a 7-5 victory over Hastings in Friday’s decisive third game of the first round. No stats were available for the game.
The Mudhens and Dukes will square off once again in Game 2 at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jack Ruhr Field in Miesville. If necessary, Game 3 will be at 8 p.m. Friday in Dundas.
