Amateur baseball: Bears top Bombers
CANNON FALLS - After a quiet start to the season at the plate, the Cannon Falls Bears collected 18 hits and beat the Bay City Bombers 13-3 in eight innings Friday. Seven Bears finished with multiple hits.
"We went up there with a simple approach - swing the bat when the ball is in the zone," Cannon Falls player/manager Keith Meyers said. "We just hit the ball well."
Jake Winchell was 2-for-2 with three RBI for Cannon Falls. Rich Burr finished 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI. Nick Nobach was 2-for-2 with a run. Cory Hedeen was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Luke Winchell was 2-for-5 with an RBI, run and stolen base.
Matt Klein earned the win for the Bears. He was on a pitch count and went five innings. Klein finished with eight strikeouts and no walks. He allowed three hits and hit a batter.
In his final inning of work he struck out three batters.
"He was hitting his stride there in the fifth," Meyers said. "He looked real good."
Steve Bowe took the loss for Bay City.
Cannon Falls (2-1 overall, 1-0 Classic Cannon Valley League) plays host Wednesday to the Rochester Roadrunners. The Bombers (0-1 overall and in the league) are at Prescott today.
