Amateur Baseball: Bears one win away from state
The Cannon Falls Bears are on the verge of a repeat trip to state after going 1-1 to start the Region 4C tournament.
In the opening round, Cannon Falls lost to host Waterville 4-1 on Saturday. Then facing elimination on Sunday, the Bears stayed alive with a 3-0 victory against Morristown.
With Region 4C having three teams eligible for state, Cannon Falls will look to lock up another state appearance in a rematch against Waterville at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Waterville. Lake Crystal and Blue Earth have already secured state berths.
In Sunday’s 3-0 win, the Bears got a dominant performance on the mound by Keith Meyers, who struck out 14 and held the Morries to three hits, all singles, and no walks. Meyers also helped on the offensive end, putting Cannon Falls’ first run on the board with a two-out double in the third inning that scored Cory Hedeen.In the fifth, Zeke Williams made it 2-0 with an RBI single that plated Chris Nobach. Cannon Falls’ final run came in the ninth as Billy Coakley scored on an infield error.Against Waterville on Saturday, one big inning doomed the Bears, forcing them into the loser’s bracket. The Indians led off the sixth inning with six straight singles, with RBI hits from Cody Reinke, Brandon Miller and Derek Masberg. With two outs, Rich Rients drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.Held to just two hits through the first six innings, Cannon Falls finally got on the board when Brandon Voth cracked a solo home run over the wall in right-center field.Hedeen was tagged with the loss after allowing 11 hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Rients got the win for the Indians with a strong outing in 8 1/3 innings.
