Amateur Baseball: Bears clinch top seed in 4C
Already clinching its spot in the Class C state tournament on Friday, the Cannon Falls Bears ended the Region 4C tournament on fire, going 3-0 over the weekend to clinch the region’s No. 1 seed.
Going 3-0 with a win Saturday over Blue Earth (5-1) and two consecutive victories over Lake Crystal (10-0, 8-0) on Sunday, Cannon Falls gets a first-round bye in the Class C state tournament. The Bears will open play on Aug. 24 at Maple Lake against the winner of Avon and Richmond.
Against Blue Earth, Josh Harrison put Cannon Falls on the board in the second inning, scoring on a groundout by Braxton Lindow. Then in the third, the Bears tacked on three runs thanks to an RBI double by Rich Burr, a sacrifice fly by Taylor Pagel and a one-run single by Harrison. Blue Earth’s lone run came in the fourth on an RBI single from Cody Sukalski. Cory Hedeen got the win on the mound for Cannon Falls.
Needing to beat Lake Crystal twice to get the region’s No. 1 seed, it took the Bears just seven innings to take Game 1 10-0.
Pagel, Luke Winchell and Harrison each had RBI singles in the first inning as Cannon Falls opened with six hits. Keith Meyers had an RBI single in the fourth inning, and the rout was on in the fifth as Cannon Falls tacked on five runs. Harrison had a two-run single, and Meyers added two more runs on a double. Ryan Brintnall brought Harrison with a single. Winchell put the Bears up by 10, scoring on a groundout by Brintnall.
With the No. 1 seed on the line in Game 2, Cannon Falls’ offense continued to roll as Pagel made it a 1-0 game with an RBI single. Then the Bears blew the game wide open in the second with six runs on six hits.
Pagel drove in Meyers one more time in the fifth inning to make it an 8-0 ball game. Finishing with 17 team hits, Meyers was 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI, and Lindow added four hits, a run and an RBI. Pagel and Harrison each tallied three hits in the victory.
