Amateur Baseball: Aces win 20th at home
Up 8-4 over St. Francis after eight innings on Friday, Red Wing looked like it had another win wrapped up.
But, the Saints weren’t willing to go down quietly, scoring two runs and loading the bases with just one out.
Luckily for the Aces, relief pitcher JT Cunningham was able to settle down and sit St. Francis down with a strikeout and a pop fly to leave the Ath with an 8-6 victory.
“JT pitched a great seventh and eighth and ran into trouble in the ninth,” Red Wing pitcher/co-manager Andy Gibart said. “He got himself out of trouble and it was good to see him battle through it.”
With the victory, the Aces picked up their 20th home win of the season, moving to 20-1 within the friendly confines of the Ath.
“It’s been a pretty special year here,” Gibart said. “I don’t think we’ve accomplished something like that in my time with the Aces and this is my 14th year.”
Steve Boldt led Red Wing’s offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. Alex Quiding was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Adam Thygesen had two hits, including a double, two RBI and a run in the victory.
Continuing his offensive tear, Mike Stegora tied Kelly Bohmbach’s single-season triples record, connecting with his sixth triple in the third inning. He finished 1-for-3 with two runs.
The Aces (25-5) take on Hastings Sunday in an important Section 1B matchup.
