Amateur Baseball: Aces take Game 1 from Northfield
A loss to Northfield on Thursday meant Red Wing would have to visit the Knights on Sunday in the opening round of the Section 1B playoffs. Home field advantage meant little, however, as the Aces pounded Northfield, 12-4, to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series with Game 2 to come at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Red Wing Athletic Field.
Ty Buck punctuated a three-run first inning for Red Wing with a double that scored Jimmy Bohmbach. The Knights got the run back in the bottom of the first, but the Aces claimed it back when Alex Quiding doubled home Zach Laffey.
Red Wing blew the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs, including a 3-run triple from Laffey.
Tim Maus hit a two-run home run in the eighth for Northfield, in an inning that saw the Knights plate three runs. But Red Wing answered with three runs in the top of the ninth, including a Laffey double that scored Adam Thygesen.
Laffey finished 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBI. Buck was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Quiding was also 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Aaron Johnson got the win, giving up six hits in as many innings, while walking two and striking out seven to go with one run allowed.
The Aces will go for the sweep on Tuesday night, with Game 2 slated for an 8 p.m. start at the Red Wing Athletic Field.
