Amateur Baseball: Aces bow out at Super Sections
After struggling with the bats on Friday, Red Wing was able to pound the ball Saturday in the Marshall Super Section elimination game against Mankato.
Problem was, the Mets were able to keep the bats going, tacking on 10 runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to knock out the Aces with a 13-9 victory at Legion Field.
Missing out on a second straight Class B state tournament berth, Red Wing ends the 2013 season with a 32-9 record and the Classic Cannon Valley League title.
The Mets ended up falling 4-1 to the Cold Spring Springers with a trip to state on the line. Clinching the No. 1 seed from the Super Section was the Savage Outlaws, who defeated Cold Spring 4-3 on Saturday.
Mankato tacked on two runs in the top of the first, but Red Wing took a 4-2 lead after the second inning. Getting five straight hits in the second, Zach Laffey, Kyle Blahnik, Tyler Goering and Adam Thygesen each hit for doubles. Laffey, Blahnik, Mike Stegora and Goering each scored in the inning.
Stegora brought in another run for the Aces in the fourth, reaching home on a sacrifice fly by Josh Thygesen.
The Mets got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Josh Anderson scored on an error. Then in the fifth, Mankato tied the game on runs by Mitch Sellers and Todd Standish.
In the sixth, the Mets began to pull away. Collecting six hits in the frame, Sam Stier and Sellers each had RBI singles. With two outs, Mankato did not relent as Jovan Rodriguez and Anderson each connected with two-out RBI singles to make it a 9-5 contest.
Mankato’s roll didn’t stop in the seventh as Adam Greiger hit a bases-clearing double to the left-center gap. Greiger came around on a single by Anderson to make it 13-5.
Trying to stay in the fight, the Aces put up a run in the eighth, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Blahnik. Then with elimination looming in the top of the ninth, Adam Thygesen drove in Goering and Josh Thygesen with a two-run single. Adam Thygesen plated a run on a grounder by Zach Laffey.
Racking up 16 team hits, Anderson led the Mets with a 3-for-5 outing with three RBI and a run. Standish was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, and Sellers scored three times in the victory. Bobby Wellman got the win after going five innings in relief for Mankato.
Garner was Red Wing’s top hitter, going 3-for-5, while Stegora was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Adam Thygesen went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, and Tyler Goering had one hit, two runs and an RBI as the team collected 12 hits.
Playing in his final game with the Aces, Andy Gibart was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
