Amateur Baseball: Aces blank Bay City
Pitching was the name of the game Friday night at Red Wing Athletic Park as the host Aces dispatched Bay City, 3-0, in a game that featured eight total hits.
JT Cunningham held the Bombers to four hits over seven innings while striking out nine to go with just one walk. In the eighth, Ty Buck walked a batter, but struck out two to avoid any damage. And Aaron Johnson picked up the save with a perfect ninth inning that saw all three Bay City batters walk back to the dugout having struck out.
“JT had a really good game. All of our pitchers had a great game. Our pitching has been great lately,” said Aces manager Jimmy Bohmbach.
In the fifth inning, Jordan Warren got to second on one of four Bay City errors, and was pushed to third on a Josh Thygesen bunt. Dave Jensen singled to score Warren a few batters before Alex Quiding recorded an RBI from a fielder’s choice.
Adam Thygesen and Mike Hommes had the other two Red Wing hits.
Red Wing jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first, but Elko battled back to clip the Aces, 9-6, on Tuesday.
The Express answered Red Wing’s 3-0 start with a single run in the first and second innings. After the Aces added a fourth run in the third, Elko doubled down in the bottom half to tie the game. Then in the fourth, Elko took the lead with another pair of runs, only to see Red Wing tie it up in the top of the fifth.
The scoring would end in the bottom of the fifth when the Express pushed three runs across.
Zach Garner, Adam Thygesen, Steve Boldt and Kyle Blahnik each had two hits.
T.J Evanson had three hits, including a two-run home run, to lead Elko. The two teams combined for 11 errors.
