25 years of crowns
GOODHUE — The Goodhue High School gymnasium was dressed to impress Friday night for the 25th annual Miss Goodhue pageant during the first day of Volksfest 2014.
Four new crowns were presented to this year’s royalty and the new Volksfest king and queen were named.
Madison Schafer was crowned this year’s Miss Goodhue by last year’s queen Kendrah Schafer to conclude the pageant. Other royalty include Princesses Ashley Cordes and Sydney McNamara. Cassandra Richter is Miss Congeniality.
Former Goodhue Mayor Vaughn Bien and his wife, Therese, are the reigning Volksfest king and queen. They have been Goodhue residents for 65 years and have seven children, 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Fourteen young ladies introduced themselves, their sponsor and escort for the event to start the evening.
Participants answered a drawn question in random order.
Schafer was asked the best aspect of Goodhue. Her answer included the “strong faith base” of the community, where “hardly anything is open on Sundays because everyone is busy in the churches.”
McNamara was asked, “Of beauty, brains and wealth, which would you choose?”
“I think I am supposed to say ‘brains,’” she said with a smile, followed by, “Because beauty comes within.”
A collective chuckle rumbled through the pageant crowd.
For the talent portion of the event, the participants put on a skit to represent each of the 14 sponsors.
Former Miss Goodhue royalty, dating back to 1989, was also introduced to represent the 25 years of crowning in the town.
