Spotlight: Museums exhibit historic collection this weekend

Red Wing’s six history museums open their doors to the public for their first Museum Crawl. All six will be admission-free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Passports with details and a map will be available at each museum. Anyone who visits all six and collects a stamp at each location will have a chance to win a matted print of a local scene.

Completed passports can be turned in at any of the museums. The winner will be drawn at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Impetus for the event was the donation of the Phil Revoir collection to the museums. A retired Red Wing photographer, Revoir collected and restored vintage photographs, ephemera and memorabilia. His life’s work was acquired by a benefactor who donated the items to the museums for everyone to enjoy.

Each facility was able to select images that coincide with its mission. The county museum became the keeper of several historic albums of photographs and images from other Goodhue County communities.

Surplus items from the collection will be sold at the new Red Wing Pottery Museum in the Pottery Place Annex during the crawl. Proceeds will help support the local nonprofit museums.

In conjunction with the crawl, the new Red Wing Marine Museum will hold a grand opening celebration on Sunday in the former city water works building.

The Boathouse Band will provide musical entertainment outdoors from noon to 3 p.m. At 1 p.m. the Chamber of Commerce will do a ribbon cutting and Mike Wilson, who established the museum, will speak briefly.
