Spotlight: Two Rochester artists start off the new year with an exhibit at Crossings. Randy Oas and Youngrhee Jeon show their work Jan. 2 to Feb. 14. A public reception takes place 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday Jan. 11 in the Zumbrota gallery.

Jeon studied Oriental painting in South Korea and China, and her work features repeated patterns of “dakji,” a traditional toy in Korea and other Asian nations. It is made of folded origami paper.

“People ask me why it has to be dakji. Some people may find dakji’s original function or the playful image seems unrelated to my work. At the age of 20, I saw this object for the first time. Then, I looked back and saw the empty holes in my childhood. Just when I finally got in a society I culturally and ethnically belonged to, I realized that I missed a lot of experiences while growing up,” Jeon explained.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in commercial art from the College of Associated Arts in St. Paul, Oas entered into a 20-year career in art direction, graphic design and production. His urge to alter perception began in childhood.

“Twirling in circles and then drawing on the sidewalk was the first in a long list of attempts,” at that alteration, he said. “My first influences were my mother’s nursing manuals – thick, clinical volumes filled with detailed, unnerving illustrations and overlays.”

The exhibit and reception are free, and people may view the work during regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Crossings is located at 320 East Ave., Zumbrota.
