GOODHUE — The school auditorium was packed on Friday, June 8, with fans eager to cheer on their favorite royal hopefuls.
Candidates for Miss Goodhue crossed the stage with poise and grace as winners from years past read aloud their accomplishments. Nine girls competed for the titles of Miss Congeniality, princess and Miss Goodhue, including: Monica Atkinson, Samantha Bartholome, Ashley Clemens, Paige Holst, Mackenzie Luhman, Brooklynn Meyer, Mary Poncelet, Elise Tipcke and Jada Voth.
These girls carried impressive resumes, everything from donating 400 pairs of shoes to children in Zimbabwe and being a certified nursing assistant. The girls also work a variety of jobs including lifeguard, retail and farm labor. Many aspired to enter the health care field as doctors, psychologists and nurses.
In the end, the three judges had to make their call and the following 2018 Miss Goodhue royalty was crowned:
Mary Poncelet — Miss Goodhue
Monica Atkinson — Princess
Elise Tipcke — Princess
Ashley Clemens — Miss Congeniality
In addition, Curt and Marie Strusz are Volksfest king and queen and grand marshals the Sunday afternoon parade will be Judy and Roy Lodermeier.
"I'm going to try and set the best example possible, I'm really ecstatic," Poncelet said.
