Speech contest winners donate to local charities
Resident Ernie Stone took first place at the third-annual Great American Experiment speech competition held July 3 at the Red Wing Band Shell. Stone donated his $200 winnings to the Deer Crest Residents Fund.
The second-place speaker was Al Risberg, who donated $150 to Red Wing Care Clinic; third-place finisher was Teresa Whitson, who donated $100 to Red Wing Young Life; and honorable mention went to Brian Hinton, who donated $50 to the United Way of Crow Wing and Southern Cass Counties General Fund.
Because $55 remained in the event's account, a call to audience members to give an impromptu speech was made. Former Sen. John Howe responded and donated his winnings to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
